Basketweave Washcloth

Since I am into post stitches these days, here is another pattern for you to practice your post stitches. This one is much easier and when you master this, cable stitches would be easy peasy. Cotton yarn is best for this project since this is a washcloth. Hope you will enjoy making this.

Materials

  • Sugar n' Cream Supersize in colors of your choice
  • H/5.0 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Stitches Used:

  • ch(s) - chain(s)
  • dc - double crochet
  • fpdc - front post double crochet
  • bpdc - back post double crochet
Here is a link to Moogly's Tutorial video for Front and Back Post-Double Crochet.
Note: Beginning chain 2 will always be counted as a stitch.

Instructions:

Row 1.  Chain 37 or a multiple of 4 plus 5 (32+5). dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and all the stitches till the end. Turn. ( 36 dc including the beginning ch2).

Row 2. Ch2, BPDC in the next 3 stitches (do not include the first st). *FPDC in the next 4 stitches, BPDC in the next 4 stitches*. Repeat till end including the beg. ch 2 of the previous round. Turn. (36 sts)

Row 3. Ch2, BPDC in the next 3 stitches (do not include the first st). *FPDC in the next 4 stitches, BPDC in the next 4 stitches*. Repeat till end including the beg. ch 2 of the previous round. Turn. (36 sts)

Row 4. Ch2, FPDC in the next 3 stitches ( do not include the first st). *BPDC in the next 4 stitches, FPDC in the next 4 stitches*. Repeat till end including the beg. ch2 or previous round. Turn. (36 sts)

Row 5. Ch2, FPDC in the next 3 stitches ( do not include the first st). *BPDC in the next 4 stitches, FPDC in the next 4 stitches*. Repeat till end including the beg. ch2 or previous round. Turn. (36 sts)

Repeat Rows 2 to 5 three more times.  Fasten off and weave all ends.

That's how simple it is. You can actually add more rows if you like. This a 4x2 basket weave crochet stitch. For more of basket weave crochet stitch, Red Heart has a post all about basket weave. Here is the link.

Cable Stitch Hat

I am really intimidated with Cable Stitch Crochet. I've been eyeing to do it for months but haven't fully made a real project for it. But this weekend I had the courage to finally make a hat. The first hat I made was a bummer. I keep on frogging it and yarn doesn't look so good anymore because of me frogging it too much. But I did finish it and I wonder if I'll ever post it in here. Here is a picture of it below:

What do you think? Should I? or not? Is the pattern for this hat worth posting here?

Anyways, let's get started with this hat that I am sharing you here. After so many attempts of making cable stitch hat, I finally settled for this simple hat. The pattern is easy and fast to make.

Materials:
  • #3 light yarn ( Gantsilyo Guru in Pastel Blue and Clay)
  • G/4.00mm Crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • pompom maker (optional)
  • scissors
Terms Used:
  • ch - chain
  • sc- single crochet
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • fpdc - front post double crochet
  • fptc - front post treble crochet
* FPDC - Front Post Double Crochet. Yarn over, insert hook on the post of indicated stitch doing it in front, instead of the regular inserting on top of a stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through two loops, yarn over once more and pull through all loops

*FPTC - Front Post Treble Crochet. Yarn over two times, Insert hook on the post of indicated stitch doing it in front, instead of the regular inserting on top of a stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again and pull through two loops, yarn over again and pull through two loops, yarn over once more and pull through all loops.

Here is Moogly's tutorial about post stitches.

*Update- Someone asked me if this hat can be downsized, yes, of course, it can. You just need to make the ribbing to fit in your head size, and make Round 1 of the Body of the Hat,  be a multiple of 6. But here is a rough detail on the number of rows you have to make for each size:

0-4 months
  • Ribbing - 42 rows
  • Body of the hat Round 1- 48 single crochets
5-9 months
  • Ribbing - 50 Rows
  • Body of the hat Round 1 - 60 single crochets
9-Toddler
  • Ribbing - 68 Rows
  • Body of the Hat Round 1- 72 single crochets
Child
  • Ribbing - 78 rows
  • Body of the Hat Round 1 - 84 single crochets
Young Adult
  • Ribbing - 90 rows
  • Body of the Hat Round 1 -96 single Crochets

Instructions:

Ribbing
Row 1.  Chain 6, SC in the second ch from the hook. SC each stitch till the end. Chain 1 and turn. (5sc)

Row 2.  SC on both loops in the first stitch, SC on Back Loops Only (BLO) in next 3 stitches,  SC on both loops in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn. (5 sc).

Repeat Row 2 until the desired length of your ribbing is achieved. With my ribbing, I ended up to Row 96.

*Some says that Row 96 is way too long for a ribbing. But please remember that I am using a #3 yarn in this pattern and a G hook.

Join both ends of your ribbing by slip stitching each stitch together. Change the color of your yarn, chain 1 and turn your work on the right side.

Body

Round 1. SC in each stitch around, and adding increases(sc) along the way and make sure that the total SC is 108 or a multiple of 6. Join with a SL ST in first SC. (108 sc)

Round 2. CH 2, HDC in each stitch around. Join with a SL ST in the first stitch. (108 HDC)

Round 3. CH 2, HDC in the first stitch, *skip 2 stitches, FPTC in the next 2 stitches. FPTC back to the 2 skipped stitches. HDC in next unworked stitch and in the next.* Repeat till the end, ending with 1 HDC in the last stitch. Join with a SL ST in first HDC. (108sts)

Round 4.  CH 2, HDC in the first stitch, *FPDC in next and the next 3 stitches, HDC in next 2 stitches* Repeat till the end, ending with 1 HDC in the last stitch. Join with a SL ST in first HDC

Repeat Round 3 and 4 respectively until you reached your desired length of your hat. But I think up to Round 26 will be long enough.  Whatever Round you will stop make sure it is same as Round 4.

We will begin to decrease our hat in preparation for closing the hat.

Round 27.  CH 1, SC in the first stitch, *skip 2 stitches, FPTC in the next 2 stitches, FPTC back to the 2 skipped stitches. SC dec in the next two unworked stitch.* Repeat till the end, ending with 1 sc in the last stitch. Join with a SL ST in first SC.

Round 28. CH1, SC in the first stitch, *FPDC in next and the next 3 stitches, skip the next stitch* Repeat till the end, ending with a SC in the last stitch. Join with a SL ST in first SC.

Round  29.  CH 1, SC decrease all the way around. Join with a SL ST in first stitch.

Round 30. CH 1, SC in all stitches around. Join with a SL ST in first stitch. Fasten off and leave a long tail. Long enough to run through all the stitches and closed the hat.  Add your pompom by sewing it on the top of your hat using again the long tail end.

Fasten off and weave all ends.

I am so happy on how my Cable Stitch Hat turned out. This is just a simple Cable Stitch technique. I might do another hat with much complex cable stitches.

So I hope you will love this hat and try to make this also. Tell me what you think about it after and share me some photos of your finished project.

Free Patterns: Crochet Summer Hat

Summer is surely felt half around the globe. But here in the Philippines summer is all year round. But this month of July we surely experienced the Rainy Season. It rains every day, and when it rains it surely pours. That's not just a metaphor but it is literally raining here all the time this year.

But still, when the sun is up, it sure felt like summer all the time. The internet is full of so many free patterns for crochet. There so many choices to make if you want to start on a project. I compiled some free patterns for a sun hat.

  1. Country Girl by Drops Design  - Head over to Drops design and you will find an endless choice of beautiful project. They never fail to impress me.
  2.  The Beginner Wide Brim Hat by Jenny and Teddy I like the blue Flower and how wide it is.
  3. Beach day Sun Hat by A Crocheted Simplicity.   This is simply pretty.
  4. Summer Harmony by Drops Design. Again Drops Design offers so many beautiful free pattern.

And my very own version of a Summer Hat

I made this one in 2015. But I did not write down the pattern, so far this is my favorite of all the hat that I've made. I will try to make something like this again and write down the pattern to share for all of you.

So I hope you all have a wonderful summer. It's wonderful to stay under the sun once in a while just make sure to put on something to protect you from the harmful rays. Don't forget your Sunny Hat and your Sunblock all the time while on the beach.
