Marilee Beach/Market Bag

Is it too early for summer projects? Spring has just started. But here in the Philippines, it will be Summer by the last week of March, that is why I made this bag. I love making bags also aside from hats. This bag is not only a beach bag but also can be a market bag. So it's also appropriate for Spring Season. It is even appropriate for all seasons since the V-stitch Clusters in this pattern don't have a Chain 1 in between them, so there are not many holes in this bag. So this bag can be used any time of the year actually.

So here is my Marilee Beach/Market Bag. Marilee means "star of the sea" since I intended this bag to be a beach bag I imagine it to be on the beach. The yellow yarns are the stars in the middle of the sea (the blue yarns).  That's cheesy! haha! Don't mind that explanation let's proceed with the pattern, shall we?

Materials
  • COLOR A - Red Heart With Love in Blue Hawaii (300 -320 yards)
  • COLOR B - Red Heart With Love in Daffodil (300 -320 yards)
  • I/5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Wooden Buttons (optional)
  • Stitch Markers (optional)

 Terms Used
  • CH(s) – Chain(s)
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • BLO - Back Loops Only

Special Stitch
  • V-Stitch Cluster– Yarn over, insert the hook to the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through two loops. Yarn over and insert back to the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through two loops, yarn over once more and pull through all loops. (This is the first half of your V-stitch Cluster.)  With this V-stitch Cluster, I did NOT put a Chain 1 in between the clusters. So, yarn over again, and insert your hook in the same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Yarn over again and insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over for the last time and pull through all loops.  V-stitch Cluster made.
  •  I made a crochet chart for those who can't understand a written pattern. BUT this is my first time making a chart and I am not so confident with it. But still, I will share it with you guys. Just don't mind the wide spaces in between, just imagine it is not there (lol) and just follow the stitches.

Gauge
Bottom of the Bag – 18 rounds X 18 SC = 4-inch square
Main Bag ( V-stitches Cluster) – 6 rounds X 5  V-stitches Cluster = 4-inch square

Notes:

  • Starting or Beginning CH 2 stitches are not counted as a stitch
  • You can add more rounds at Round  27-41 if you want your bag to be longer.
  • You can also add more chains in your strap if you want to strap to be longer than mine. You can make it a sling bag if you want. I recommend this kind of strap for it does not stretch that much and it can be really strong. So far from all the straps I've made, this one is the strongest and the one that doesn't stretch much.

Attached your straps to your bag, and add some wooden buttons to it if you want. I recommend that you lined your bag. It can really help your bag live long.  But if you will use this mainly as a Beach Bag you can opt to not to line this bag. But then it is still beneficial to your bag to line it.

This was a long pattern but it is actually an easy one. It's just a repeat of stitches. The bottom of the bag you can adjust it to your liking, you can either continue on with the increases and make it bigger you can stop on making the increases and make it a smaller bag.

I see myself on the glasses. haha. Don't mind my fat face. haha.

  1. I always appreciate others bags as I just don't do a great job with them.
