Daphne Beret

I've learned this stitch way back when I first started crochet... that is way back in my Elementary years. I did not know any pattern, I did not know what it was called, my mother who taught me this stitch would just say, "make those who look like a fan".  Until now actually, I don't know what is the proper name for this type of stitch. Some say Open Shell Stitch, some say a Fan Stitch. Well, I call this Fan Stitch since that's what I've been calling them then.

As I was making this hat, it was kind of nostalgic to me. It brings me back to when I was only a teenager, making doilies and appliances cover for our house. That's what I only knew then to make, I never imagine I could make dresses and hats and blankets and so much more with crochet. I'd do them without any pattern, just free hand, just anything that comes to my mind.

And it's Coachella Week! I did not intend to make this hat for Coachella but I just found out that this is Coachella Week, and how appropriate this Beret would be for the event.

So here is my Daphne Beret, I hope you'll like this one. It's a Beret suited also for this Spring until Summer. I actually made different sizes for this one using the same pattern. I added some notes on how to make this smaller.

Materials
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Buff (160-200 yds)
  • H/5.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Button

Terms Used
  • CH(s) – Chain(s)
  • SC- Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only

Notes
  • You can easily adjust this hat for any sizes of the head from newborn to adult. Just measure the head circumference, make your ribbing according to your measurement. And just squeeze into your ribbing a multiple of 6 for ROUND 1 of the Body of the Hat. Just make sure to make Round 1 much more stitches than your Ribbing. And continue your work from there. Skip a Round for much smaller head like that of kids and toddlers.
  • Beginning CH 3 is counted as a stitch
  • Big Fan – 3 DC, CH 1, 3 DC in a stitch
  • Medium Fan – 2 DC, CH 1, 2 DC in a stitch
  • Small Fan – DC, CH 1, DC in  a stitch

Gauge
4 Rows of a Big Fan x 3 Big Fan across with CH 1 in between = 2 ½ inch Square or (6cm)

Fasten off and weave in all ends. Attached your button or you can also attach a pompom if you want.
