Slouchy Bunny Mesh Hat

It's a mesh hat with two (2) Bunnies on it. Can you see the bunny in it? It works up so easily so you can make this one in a day and be ready for the Easter. You can wear it while egg hunting...

I used 4.00mm Crochet hook and a #3 yarn. It's smaller than our regular #4 yarn that we/I usually used. That is why there are more stitches on this hat compared to the precious hats I made.

Materials:

  • Gantsilyo Guro Milk Cotton Medium (#3) yarn
  • G/4.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Terms Used:
  • CH(s) - Chain (s)
  • DC - Double Crochet
  • FPDC - Front Post Double Crochet
  • BPDC - Back Post Double Crochet
Notes:
  • Blank Square = DC and CH 1and a skipped stitch.
  • Shaded Square = 2 DC
  • Remember to always start with a DC then CH1 for a Blank Square.  So when you change from a SHADED SQUARE to a BLANK SQUARE you will have 2DC (shaded square) 1dc and CH1 (blank square). That means you will have 3 DC and a CH1 for a Shaded square followed by a blank square.
  • Also, don't forget the skipped stitch in a blank square. Example for 2 Blank Square is, " DC, CH1, skip a stitch, DC, CH1 and skip a stitch".
  • Beginning CH 2 is not counted as a stitch.
Gauge

  • 9 rounds by 18 Double Crochet = 4-inch square
Instructions

R1.  Make a Magic Ring, CH 2 and 12 DC into the ring, OR CH 3, and 12 DC into the first CH, closed the ring tightly.

R2. CH 2, DC in the first stitch, then CH1. * DC in the next stitch, thenCH1* repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 12 DC and 12 CH1 Spaces)

R3. CH2, DC in the first stitch, 2 DC in CH 1 space. * DC in the next stitch, 2 DC in CH1 space.*  Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 36 DC)

R4. CH2, DC in the first stitch then CH 1. * Skip a stitch, DC in the next, then CH1, DC in the next stitch and CH 1 * Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (24 DC and 24 CH1 spaces)

R5. CH2, DC in the first stitch, * DC in CH1 space, DC in the next stitch, then 2 DC in CH 1 space and DC in the next stitch.* Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 60 DC)

R6. CH2, DC in the first stitch then CH1. * Skip a stitch, DC in next, then CH1, skip a stitch, DC in next. CH1 and DC in the next stitch then CH1. * Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 36 DC and 36 CH1 Spaces)

R7. CH2, DC in the first stitch, * DC in CH1 space, DC in next stitch, DC in CH1 space, DC in next stitch and 2 DC in CH1 space, and DC in next stitch.* Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 84 DC)

R8.  CH2, DC in the first stitch, CH1. * Skip a stitch, DC in next, then CH1, skip a stitch, DC in the next stitch, CH 1 and skip a stitch, DC in next stitch, CH1 then DC in next stitch and CH1. *  Repeat until the end and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 48 DC and 48 CH1 spaces)

From Round 9 to Round 30 Please refer to the graph.
  • Blank Square = DC and CH 1
  • Shaded Square = 2 DC

R30. CH2, DC in each stitch all the way around until the end. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (96 DC)

R31-32. CH2, *FPDC, BPDC* repeat until the end. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (96 Post Stitches)

R33. Slip stitch in each stitch all the way around until the end on the BLO. Don't tighten your slip stitches too much so it will fit in your head snuggly. (96 slip stitches).

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

I made another graph. Same instructions, same bunny but the graph had a little difference. So that means that from Round 9-30 it will be different. Plus it is longer by 2 round, I made the red hat out of it. Please refer to the graph and the hat below.

R32. CH2, DC in each stitch all the way around until the end. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (96 DC)

R33-34. CH2, *FPDC, BPDC* repeat until the end. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (96 Post Stitches)

R35. Slip stitch in each stitch all the way around until the end on the BLO. Don't tighten your slip stitches too much so it will fit in your head snuggly. (96 slip stitches).

I love how the possibilities of a Mesh hat is almost infinite... I can put almost any character or design for it to be a different hat.

It was sure a fun project to make, and I am happy I am able to share the pattern to everyone. So that's it, I hope you enjoy making this project and don't forget to Tag me on Instagram and Twitter with your finished project and also like my Page on Facebook, Si Nanay Madel. I would love to see what you've done and Pin it also on Pinterest.

Thank you and God bless!

Crochet Tutorial: Magic Ring VS Starting Chain

The past week has been so busy for us. My husband is a teacher, and elementary teacher at that. And so since this is the time of the year where closing programs and graduations are done, my husband has been so busy with the Graduation of his Grade 6 pupils. And I, the wife, is busier... hahaha. I've been up almost every night helping him with the certificates and the programs! Wow! until now I still can't sleep if it's not passed 12 midnight. I need to be back to my old routine, I cannot live like this... I am like a zombie every morning.

So, because of that, this post has been so delayed. I promised to make a post about Magic Ring and Starting Chain, but it took me a little while to actually make this post.

Most of you prefer the Magic Ring, but there are some also who is on Starting Chain but would love to make the Magic Ring but still can't remember or does not know how to do it.

Many are intimidated by Magic Ring because it looks complicated to make, but once you got the hang of it you may not want to go back to Starting Chains again. For this tutorial, I am using a #3 yarn and a G/4.00mm Hook.

Materials:
  • Yarn
  • Hook
  • Scissors

Let's start with Starting Chain. This is the most common method and I think the very first method used. I never know Magic Ring before until I stumble upon it on Youtube.

Starting Chain.

Start by Chaining 4 for Double Crochet, 3 for Half-double Crochet and 2 for Single Crochet.

Then Double Crochet (Half Double Crochet, Single Crochet) on the first stitch you've made or the last stitch from your hook.

12 (or any number called by the pattern for the first round) Double Crochet (Half Double Crochet, Single Crochet, etc..) on the same stitch.

Then join with a slip stitch on the first stitch to end your round.  As you can see, there is a very small hole in the center of your work. And this method is so easy that is there are more crocheters using this one than the magic ring. It's the basic starting method for working in rounds.

Then you can proceed with every round as what the/your pattern instructs.

So next is the Magic Ring.

Magic Ring.

First, wrap the yarn around in your hand like in the picture. In this picture, I was using my whole palm, but as you progress you can use your index and middle finger, some even is using their index finger only.

Then hold the end of your yarn with your thumb.

Then insert your hook into the both of the yarn strands in your palm and take the last strand and twist it like in the picture below.

Then pull that yarn in front of your first yarn strand.

Yarn over to your working yarn (the yarn end that is connected to your skein/ball of yarn).

Pull it out to secure your ring.

Then you have your magic ring already.

To test if your magic ring is done in the right way, pull the end of your yarn, if it will make your ring smaller then, you are doing it right.

Then Chain 3 for Double Crochet, 2 for Half Double Crochet, 1 for Single Crochet

Then Double Crochet or Half Double Crochet,.etc.. into the ring.  And pull the end of your yarn to close the ring tightly.
Then join with a slip stitch on the first stitch to end your round.

Magic Ring finishes off more cleanly than the Starting Chain Method. But it really does look complicated, but don't be intimidated, give it a try. Practice more to it then you'll soon love it.

Personally, I prefer magic ring because I like its clean finish in the center. But there are times when I feel like Starting with Chains is the best way for a project, so I do it sometimes, but more often Magic Ring is my preference.

I hope this post can help you pick the best method for you, but it really doesn't matter if you use both methods. It is even better to know both methods.

Hope you enjoy this tutorial at the same time learned something. And also don't forget to Tag me on Instagram and Twitter also like my Page on Facebook, Si Nanay Madel. I would love to see what you've done and Pin it also on Pinterest.

Thank you and God bless!

Marilee Beach/Market Bag

Is it too early for summer projects? Spring has just started. But here in the Philippines, it will be Summer by the last week of March, that is why I made this bag. I love making bags also aside from hats. This bag is not only a beach bag but also can be a market bag. So it's also appropriate for Spring Season. It is even appropriate for all seasons since the V-stitch Clusters in this pattern don't have a Chain 1 in between them, so there are not many holes in this bag. So this bag can be used any time of the year actually.

So here is my Marilee Beach/Market Bag. Marilee means "star of the sea" since I intended this bag to be a beach bag I imagine it to be on the beach. The yellow yarns are the stars in the middle of the sea (the blue yarns).  That's cheesy! haha! Don't mind that explanation let's proceed with the pattern, shall we?

Materials
  • COLOR A - Red Heart With Love in Blue Hawaii (300 -320 yards)
  • COLOR B - Red Heart With Love in Daffodil (300 -320 yards)
  • I/5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Wooden Buttons (optional)
  • Stitch Markers (optional)

 Terms Used
  • CH(s) – Chain(s)
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • BLO - Back Loops Only

Special Stitch
  • V-Stitch Cluster– Yarn over, insert the hook to the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through two loops. Yarn over and insert back to the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through two loops, yarn over once more and pull through all loops. (This is the first half of your V-stitch Cluster.)  With this V-stitch Cluster, I did NOT put a Chain 1 in between the clusters. So, yarn over again, and insert your hook in the same stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Yarn over again and insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over for the last time and pull through all loops.  V-stitch Cluster made.
  •  I made a crochet chart for those who can't understand a written pattern. BUT this is my first time making a chart and I am not so confident with it. But still, I will share it with you guys. Just don't mind the wide spaces in between, just imagine it is not there (lol) and just follow the stitches.

Gauge
Bottom of the Bag – 18 rounds X 18 SC = 4-inch square
Main Bag ( V-stitches Cluster) – 6 rounds X 5  V-stitches Cluster = 4-inch square

Notes:

  • Starting or Beginning CH 2 stitches are not counted as a stitch
  • You can add more rounds at Round  27-41 if you want your bag to be longer.
  • You can also add more chains in your strap if you want to strap to be longer than mine. You can make it a sling bag if you want. I recommend this kind of strap for it does not stretch that much and it can be really strong. So far from all the straps I've made, this one is the strongest and the one that doesn't stretch much.

Do not join in the first stitch, continue to work on slip stitches in the rounds without joining, you can use your stitch markers to mark your work. (182 slip stitches)

R2. Slip stitch into the BLO of the first stitch and on the next 89 stitches, 2 slip stitches into the next 2 stitches, then slip stitch into the next 89 stitches and 2 slip stitches into the last 2 stitches. All slip stitches must be done on the BLO. (186 slip stitches)

R3. Slip stitch into the BLO of the first stitch and on the next 90 stitches 2 slip stitches into the next, 1 slip stitch in the next stitch, 2 slip stitches into the next stitch. Slip stitch into each of the next 90 stitches and 2 slip stitches into the next stitch, 1 slip stitch into the next, 2 slip stitches into the last stitch. All slip stitches must be done on the BLO. (190 slip stitches)

R4-5.  Slip stitch into the BLO of all the stitches al1 the way around until the end. (190 slip stitches)

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Attached your straps to your bag, and add some wooden buttons to it if you want. I recommend that you lined your bag. It can really help your bag live long.  But if you will use this mainly as a Beach Bag you can opt to not to line this bag. But then it is still beneficial to your bag to line it.

This was a long pattern but it is actually an easy one. It's just a repeat of stitches. The bottom of the bag you can adjust it to your liking, you can either continue on with the increases and make it bigger you can stop on making the increases and make it a smaller bag.

I see myself on the glasses. haha. Don't mind my fat face. haha.

Seed of Spring Hat

Time flies so fast, half of the world is now experiencing spring. But here in the Philippines, it's almost summer already. So I better do my summer projects already, but before that Spring is the season right now, although the Philippines don't have 4 seasons we still acknowledge it.

So for here is a beautiful Spring Hat for you all. The stitch is done inside out and you need to flip out the hat after it is finished to have those beautiful "bumps". The stitch is called Cobblestone Stitch, but I am not sure since some Cobblestone stitch is not done this way. Well, anyway here it is I hope you will love this one and enjoy making it.

Materials
  • Red Heart with Love in White
  • H/5.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Terms Used
  • CH(s) – Chain(s)
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • TC- Treble (Triple) Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • SC dec - Single Crochet Decrease.

Gauge

Notes:
A little tip on making the ribbing, make your slip stitches a little lose, so that it will be easy to make slip stitches on them also, but don’t make it too lose also.

Do all slip stitches in the Back Loop Only (BLO)

( 132/2 =66 + 14 = 80 SC) This is how I came up with my round one counting. So regardless of the number of rows you’ve come up with your ribbing, just divide it by 2 then add 14, that will be the number of SC in your Round 1. Keep in mind the number of rows in your ribbing should be a multiple of 4 so that you will always end up with an even number for your Round 1 in the Body of your Hat.

Instructions
Ribbing

Row 1.  CH 11, slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook and in all CHs until the end, CH 1 and turn. (10 slip stitches)

R2-R132.  Slip stitch in the first stitch and in all the next stitches until the end, CH 1 and turn. Do all slip stitches in the BLO (10 slip stitches.)
Repeat in every row until when you measure your ribbing without stretching it, it will be 15 inches.  I reached 132 rows of slip stitches.

This ribbing will be really stretchy. You can make this hat for any size of the head just measure the head, then deduct 6 inches from the measurement of your head circumference, then that will be the size of your ribbing without stretching it. Example: Head circumference is 21 inches – 6 inches = 15 inches ( the size of your ribbing without stretching it.)

Join both ends of the ribbing with slip stitches also. For the body of the hat, we will be working on the wrong side. So do not turn your work. Just continue working in rounds on the wrong side.

Body of the Hat

Round 1.  CH 1. Squeeze in 80 SCs into the ribbing. Join with a slip stitch on the first stitch.(80 SC)

R2.  CH 1, the SC in the first stitch. * TC in next and SC in the next stitch.*. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (40 SC, 40 TC)

R3.  CH 1, SC in each stitch all the way around, then join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (80 SC)

R4. CH1, TC in first stitch *SC in next, TC in next stitch*. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 40 TC, 40 SC)

R5.  CH 1, SC in each stitch all the way around, then join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (80 SC)

Repeat Round 2 up to Round 5 until you reach Round 26. You can also add more rows if you want it to be very slouchy. Round 27 onwards will be the decreasing rows.

R27.  CH 1, SC in the first 6 stitches. * SC dec twice, SC in the next 6 stitches* Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (64 SC)

R28. CH1, TC in first stitch *SC in next, TC in next stitch*. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 32 TC, 32 SC)

R29.  CH 1, SC in the first 4 stitches. * SC dec twice, SC in the next 4 stitches* Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (48 SC)

R30.  CH 1, the SC in the first stitch. * TC in next and SC in the next stitch.*. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (24 SC, 24 TC)

R31.  CH 1, SC in the first 2 stitches. * SC dec twice, SC in the next 2 stitches* Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (32 SC)

R32. CH1, TC in first stitch *SC in next, TC in next stitch*. Repeat this pattern all the way around and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 16 TC, 16 SC)

R33. CH 1,  SC dec all the way until the end. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. ( 16 SC)

Flip your hat inside out to see all those " bumps". That is now the right side of your hat. Then cut yarn and leave a long tail. Run through all the stitches and cinch closed the top of your hat.

Here is a video of how I cinched closed the top of my hats.

If you want to add a flower to your hat I have here a Flower Pattern- Simple Spring Flower
